New-home Sales Up in 2012

The U.S. Census Bureau reported today that new single-family home sales are up just under 20% from 2011 to 2012. The total? 367,000 new homes were sold last year. Seeing an increase in home sales is always a plus, but this is especially positive news because this is the first annual gain for home sales in seven years.

Home prices continue to be on the upswing, as well. In December, the median sales price for new homes was $248,900. That’s a 9.6% increase from the previous year and a 1.3% increase from November.

We’ve still got a lot of ground to make up in 2013, however. Despite these encouraging numbers, 2012 was still the third worst  year for new-home sales since 1963.
