So you’ve decided to start a new career in the real estate industry! There’s going to be a long list of things you need to do, but which of them should you be taking care of first? 1. Choosing the right broker
First things first, you’ll need to decide whether you want to work for a nationally recognized brokerage company or a smaller local firm.This is one of the most important steps when starting out, as the brokerage you choose can play a big part in your success or failure in the life of real estate. Look for a company that strives to continually educate and train their agents, takes advantage of the most up-to-date technology and that achieves a high level of professionalism. Remember that your broker will have their hands in all of your real estate transactions, so it’s important that you feel comfortable partnering with them.
2. Choosing the right company
The company that you work for is a local office that operates under the brokerage you have chosen. While national brokerages will likely have a number offices in your area, smaller locally based brokers may have a single or just a few to choose from. You’ll want to find one that already has a strong presence in the local market because you can use their reputation to help establish trust among buyers and sellers for your personal brand. Look on local review sites or pay attention to things like newspapers and lawn signs. If you discover that one company has been making a better name for themselves than others, then they would probably be a good choice.
Like choosing a brokerage, you’ll want to find one that continually provides training and offers educational resources to help make you a better agent. Remember, you want to work with a company that views their agents as investments rather than a cost, so finding a company that is always looking to extend your knowledge of real estate should be of the utmost importance.
3. Find a mentor that will show you the ropes
There’s nothing more valuable for success in real estate than experience. Sure, you can read all the articles you want, but someone that is successful and has been in the industry for a while can teach the “ins and outs” of real estate that you simply cannot gain from a book. Tips like knowing the signs of whether a lead is ready or not ready to buy or sell, how to negotiate during closing or how to efficiently manage your day-to-day tasks are all things that an experienced agent can share with you to help your grow your own personal brand.
4. Lock down your online presence
NAR has found that 90% of buyers use the Internet when searching for a home, so optimizing your online presence is crucial to generating new business. Creating a responsive website, registering on local review sites and establishing a strong social media strategy are all big parts of building your brand’s online presence. Real estate web searches on Google have grown 253% over the past four years and that number has continued to increase (NAR), which can make what potential clients find about you online the deciding factor for whether they decide to contact you.
5. Always focus on building your brand
Everything that we’ve discussed so far has led up to this step. The image that customers have of your business depends on what you make it. Your reputation as a real estate agent starts the day you sign with your company and it is something that you bring with you regardless of who you work for in the future. Always be on the look out for new ways to differentiate yourself from the competition and, more importantly, make sure that you are establishing and maintaining good relationships with all of your clients and prospects. You want to build a strong reputation so that whenever a local buyer or seller thinks of real estate, then they automatically think of contacting you.
