Putting a contract together for the first time can be pretty tough, but eventually it becomes second nature. The same is true for managing a website, blog, or social media account. It can be confusing, especially if you don’t know if you’re doing it properly. However, realizing that learning a new marketing skill requires the same steps regardless of the goal can help you master any of the different strategies you’re currently struggling with.
Start by deciding what you want to do. Do you need to draw in new prospects with a weekly blog, develop a great SEO strategy for your website, or expand your social following? Write your goal down and display it on your fridge, desk, or computer: somewhere you’ll see it every day.
Next, create a plan of action. What do you actually need to do to achieve your goal? For example, if you want to build a weekly blog, add that week’s topic to your calendar and block off time to write. If you’re trying to build your social following, create a content calendar and start scheduling content so you know what needs to be posted when.
Once you know what you need to do, it’s time to get started. Grab a cup of joe, turn some music on low, pull up your blog, website, or social page and go for it! It might be hard at first, but it will get easier as you practice and with every passing day you’ll work faster and be more productive. Make developing your new skill part of your routine. Revel in each accomplished task, then commemorate the success by drawing a smiley face or a big ol’ check mark on your calendar.
Eventually you’ll have written so many blogs, created so many awesome social posts, and done so much for your SEO that it will be second nature. You’ll be able to crank out higher quality results faster than ever. But don’t stop there! Once you’ve achieved your goal, come up with a new, measurable goal. Get specific. Maybe your new goal is to generate 15% more leads through your social sites or blog. Perhaps you want your SEO strategy to improve your Google ranking from page x to page y in the next 6 months.
